Dear Elder Swallow,
One of the highest compliments that can be paid to a missionary in the Fiji Suva Mission is to receive an assignment to train a new missionary. President Monson has taught us that the trainer is the most critical and influential call in a mission. As a result of your diligent missionary work, you have been called to serve as the trainer for Elder McKay.
As a trainer you should:
• Recognize that your assignment is a sacred trust from the Lord and me. I ask you therefore, to set the highest example of obedience and effective proselyting and to do everything in your power to help your companion begin his mission on a positive note. • Help him adapt to missionary life. Follow the Missionary Handbook. You should follow the daily schedule diligently so that he can develop the basic missionary skills by cheerfully and patiently applying the principles taught in “Preach My Gospel.” • Hold daily and weekly planning sessions to help him learn how to plan to help investigators progress towards conversion. Re-reading Pages 147 to 150 of “Preach My Gospel” will help you with this. • Make sure he participates fully as a contributing member of the companionship. From the very beginning give him the opportunity to take part in each phase of the work, even if he is somewhat hesitant. • Report to your district leader and to me in your weekly letter on his/her progress.
May the Lord’s choicest blessings be with you as you fulfill this sacred assignment and begin the task of training Elder Mckay.
With appreciation and love,
John R. Higgins, President Fiji Suva Mission

New Trainer Responsibilities
A Trainer is the highest example of missionary service. Great trust is being placed in you with this assignment. To help you to be more aware of the responsibilities you now have, you are encouraged to periodically read this paper and strive to fulfill the objectives that are required of you. This should be used with much prayer and counsel with your leaders. Your time with your new missionary will set their pace for the rest of their mission.
• Example
o Obedience The new missionary you are training needs to be shown the importance of exact obedience. This is done by precept and example. Read 3 pages of the Missionary Handbook every day with your companion. o Planning Hold effective planning sessions every night. Hold an effective Weekly Planning session every Friday. Listen to your companion and his/her input. Teach them about the Daily Planner and the Area Book. Show how Preach My Gospel explains these things. Be an effective example of using planning in missionary work. o Area Book Check the area book and ensure it is at a good standard so it would be for their best benefit. Make sure they also understand the importance of filling out the area book.
• Help Them Adapt to Missionary Life
o Daily Schedule The rigors of the daily routine can be new and taxing. Be sure to follow strictly the daily schedule and help your companion to learn and follow it. Teach them why the time we have is so precious and why we have it scheduled as it is. Help them to arise and retire on time. Ensure that both of you study effectively, every day. o The Missionary Training Program The First 12 Weeks training program is exactly what a new missionary needs to learn in the first 12 weeks of their mission. Help the trainer to understand how to really clearly teach the principles taught in this booklet. As you do so make sure the trainer apply those principles in proselyting hours.
o Teaching It is very important for you to give the new missionary every opportunity to fully participate in missionary work. It may be easier for you to do all the teaching but it is critical to include them in all aspects of missionary work. The spirit can touch the hearts of people while simple Fijian is spoken. Let them teach and be there to help them when they forget what to say. Do not let them crash and burn by helping them when they struggle. • Help Them to be a Fully Participating Member of the Companionship
Recognize the potential of your companion and help them to achieve it. Your companion should equally participate and decide on all aspects of missionary work.
o Help Them Become a Leader Cultivate your companion’s leadership skills. Teach them and help them to lead in different phases of the work, including companion study, daily and weekly planning, and lessons. Encourage them and give them feedback. o Share the Work-Load Ask for their ideas as to where to go, who to see and so forth. They are entitled to revelation. In planning sessions, let them help to decide what to teach and which commitments to extend. Keep them informed in all aspects of the work. Tell them the names of places and background information on investigators. Help your companion to feel like a missionary by sharing the work-load. o Never, Ever Put Your Companion Down Always correct with kindness. It may take some time to learn some things but be patient with them and help them along. Help the trainer to correct or deal with disobedience by doing role plays etc.
